The sea contains trillions of tonnes of magnesium, and is commonly found in the Earths crust. It is also found in large deposits of magnesite and dolomite. Magnesium is one of the essential elements to life, and the compound is commonly used in medicine.
Some compounds that magnesium is a part of are magnesium hydroxide, magnesium chloride, magnesium oxide, and magnesium sulfate.
Magnesium is in Group 2 and in Period 3. It is in Group 2 because it is a alkaline earth metal, it is less reactive than alkali metals, but they form alkaline oxides and hydroxides. It is in Period 3 because it occurs in nature and has at least one stable isotope.
